I worked at LALL & SETHI ADVOCATES for 4 weeks during Oct-Nov 2013. The firm has an excellent litigation team dealing in various fields within IP with Advocate Chander Lall as its founding Partner. Apart from having a strong foothold in India, their reach extends to 7 other countries primarily covering the entire Indian subcontinent. They also cover other IP management and transactional services.
During the course of my internship I was given the opportunity to gain exposure both in the litigation as well as in the compliance matters. The best part was that instead of restricting the interns to research based assignments, the firm actually delegates a lot of drafting work in the form of:
- Drafting trademark applications, replies to office objections and oppositions and other work,
- Preparing research notes for written submissions
Apart from the aforementioned work, I was also required to carry out online trademark searches and carry out other online investigation and other research for the seniors. One may request to accompany the Litigation Team to the High Court or District Court to gain an insight and better understanding of a case that one may have worked on.
Work Environment and Office Composition:
The Firm’s office is located in one of the prime areas of Delhi. The team comprises of one founding partner, four partners and other associates. The office has beautiful interiors and has a cafeteria as well which served everything from proper meals to snacks.
Transport is not an issue as the office is located at close proximity to South Ext – II Market. Both AIIMS and Lajpat Nagar metro stations can be reached within 15 minutes by auto.
The friendly and informal style of functioning at the office is truly remarkable. It is free of unnecessary formalities and one could even directly approach the partners for help. Everybody in the office is approachable and would willingly take the effort of ensuring that the work was not only just completed, but also understood by the interns.
Another point absolutely worth mentioning is their in-house specialised software which comprises of all their data and other files. This basically means that all the work in the firm is done electronically and the firm pursues a paperless style of functioning. On the first day of the Internship, I was tutored on how to use the software and access the files by the IT Department. It truly was a learning lesson on how efficiently the firm functioned on account of minimal manual work and how regular updating ensured that deadlines were met.
Any Other Insights
I consider myself extremely fortunate for having the opportunity to intern in L&S where the work environment was conducive to both efficient working and effective learning apart from the chance to interact with the associates to gain an insight.
